It all started because no one would rent us a beachouse ! |
1988 was a good year. The radio was playing Terence Trent D'Arby's Wishing Well and Poison's Nothin' But A Good Time. The top films were Die Hard and Beetlejuice. Terrorists were not on anyone's mind and the legal drinking age had just been raised from 18 to 21.
At George Mason University there was a student in a jam. He needed a place for his fraternity to stay at the beach, but realty companies didn't rent to people under 25.
Monroe "Roe" Baldwin wasn't gonna let The Man stop the party, though. He took a trip down in the fall, driving around the beach and looking for houses. He found an ole dude that owned a bunch of old houses and didn't mind having students rent them. A big old lightbulb burned above Roe's head – he switched it off and began thinking. “This old dude has like ten houses. I could get every fraternity on campus to rent a house here and it would be like our own 'Greek Week'! Right in Ocean Drive”
And so it was – the Kids came and had a blast at ancient gathering places like “Crazy Zack's” and “The Pad”. The week was memorable and more kids came next year. Before long kids were coming from high schools and colleges all over the place. Monroe kept finding places for them to stay until he finally in 1996 secured a permanent lot of over 50 units that were old and droopy but dedicated to student rental.
Before long it was evident that some students wanted top-notch housing for their beach week. So Monroe built The Ocean Surf Club. The luxury amenities – big screen TVs, Internet Access, became a hit. Now we're gearing up for the next big leap - The Catalina!
The Catalina was one of the first guest houses in Ocean Drive. She had seen many years of service to the beach-going community and as a result was showing her age. Now we've kept her Spirit alive with Condominium units that will sleep UP TO TWENTY IN EACH with all the luxuries you expect and then some.
As North Myrtle Beach grows so will the Myrtle Beach Tours family. Already a leader in Student vacations, Myrtle beach Tours continues to harness this neglected market while providing top quality rentals for church groups, Family reunions and more.
