"Riding the Wild Waves: Surfing North Myrtle Beach During Hurricane Erin’s Epic Swell"

When Hurricane Erin swung by North Myrtle Beach in August 2025, it kicked up some sweet waves for surfing, but it was no joke for newbies. Here’s the scoop:
  • Waves: Erin brought some solid 6–9 foot waves to North Myrtle Beach, especially from August 19–21. Surfers at Cherry Grove Pier were stoked, calling it a rare treat, like a surfer’s Christmas.
  • Surfing Vibe: Local surfers and shops like Trunk Player Surf Shop were all in, saying it felt like a prime surf party. But the waves were wild, with tricky currents, so you had to watch them for a bit before jumping in.
  • Stay Safe: The National Weather Service threw out High Surf Advisories and Rip Current Statements through at least Thursday, August 21. Those waves were gnarly for anyone not ready, and rip currents were no joke. Pros said to stick with a surfboard or boogie board and avoid empty beaches—probably a bad sign.
  • Beach Scene: Myrtle Beach didn’t get hit directly, but the surf was rough starting August 19. Red flags were likely up, telling swimmers to chill on the shore unless they knew what they were doing.
Bottom Line: If you’re a seasoned surfer, Erin’s swells were a blast in North Myrtle Beach, with 6–9 footers from August 19–21. But you had to be careful with those sketchy currents. Check flags and forecasts before paddling out!
